Lockdown life feeling like Groundhog Day yet?
Here’s three excellent films in the realm of the Bill Murray time-loop classic to bend the mind away from the new – and probably already old – routine:
Classic / If, like me, you’ve wondered what film titles other than Groundhog Day have entered our day-to-day vocabulary – you’re a bit odd. But I won’t Gaslight you nor offer a Sophie’s Choice here. THE GODFATHER (1972) writer Mario Puzo claims he coined the term now widely used for crime bosses and that’s good enough to watch it again. And if you haven’t yet, put it on the Bucket List.
Crowdpleaser / In MEMENTO (2000), director Chris Nolan takes the concept down its most twisty and satisfying tangent. Trying to catch his wife’s killer but without the ability to make short-term memories, Leonard is trapped in a tortuous mental loop, its full extent unveiled as the gripping story – told in reverse – unfolds to ingeniously climax at its beginning.
Wildcard / For straight-up live-die-repeat thrills there’s the excellent Edge of Tomorrow and Source Code, but none will shake you off your stupor more kinetically than RUN LOLA RUN (1998), a wild 81-minute love-versus-mob race through the streets of 90s Berlin.
