Unlike Justice League, which is getting recut again, not all movies that are reshot end up a mess.

The momentum for Zach Snyder’s upcoming version of Justice League grew over the weekend as he shared a clip of Henry Cavill in Superman’s black outfit, a fan favourite from the comics.

It’s one of many scenes from his original vision for the film that were cut once he had to exit the director’s chair for personal reasons. The project was thoroughly reworked and ended up a mixed bag, to say the least.

But reshoots and changes don’t always end in tears – here’s three films that bucked the trend:

RECONCEIVED – MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001)

Normal rules don’t apply to the surreal world of David Lynch.

When the pilot for his Twin Peaks spin-off series was rejected for being too weird and dark, he reimagined it as something even weirder and darker – and brilliant.

A new mind-bending final act gave the entrancing – and already trippy – narrative multiple possible readings. Frustrating for some, utterly rewarding for others – and definitely unique.

RESHOT – ROGUE ONE (2016)

If you haven’t yet seen this standout Star Wars spin-off, then chances are the most famous ‘new’ scene, with Darth Vader, won’t make you cheer like it did the fan boys.

Either way, you should put franchise fatigue aside and give this excellent standalone actioner – arguably the series’ best – a chance.

The shock decision to do rewrites and reshoots with a new director, just six months before release, made the rousing and visually-stunning film darker, richer and more satisfying.

REVISED – THE DESCENT (2005)

A blood-soaked adventure that dares as well as scares, this indie thriller was an immediate critical and fan favorite on its release in the UK.

It put fresh layers of depth on the stale creature-feature concept, as a well-constructed team of all-female friends explore a claustrophobic and monster-infested cave system.

But it was de-fanged on US distribution, when its twist ending was dropped. Thankfully, the original version is out there – seek it out.
