Happy New Film Year! Fortunately for our sanity there were some streamable beauties in this cinematically-challenged annus horribilis.
There’s no two ways about it – 2020 was a crappy year for cinema!
Being able to stream endless movies at home and have the time to catch up on classics were a blessing for my sanity.
But productions shut down, jobs were lost, releases were postponed, cinemas closed down… and will likely never be the same again.
While the lack of blockbusters allowed some indies to shine, and the likes of Amazon and Netflix are continuing to up their game, there really wasn’t too much competition for this list.
Still, these are all excellent and worth your viewing consideration for this much needed 2020-recovery long weekend.
Here is my 2020 Top Ten:
1. I’m Thinking of Ending Things (Netflix) – Full Review
2. Palm Springs (Hulu) – Read More
3. Soul (Disney+)
4. Lovers Rock / Small Axe Collection (Amazon Prime)
5. First Cow (Showtime / On Demand) – Read More
6. Tenet (On Demand)
7. Borat 2 (Amazon Prime) – Full Review
8. Mank (Netflix)
9. Sound of Metal (Amazon Prime)
10. I’m No Longer Here (Netflix) – Read More
Note – I’m looking forward to catching Nomadland and Minari, which received such limited release outside of festivals this year that it feels somewhat elitist and self-serving for critics to include in their top tens.
